User reviews 6 Review. Top review. The Return of Polish Cinema. A young woman Grazyna Dlugolecka is used and abused by several men. Director Walerian Borowczyk, the "genius who also happened to be a pornographer", had already made an award-winning short film "Dom" and stunned the world by this time with "Immoral Tales" and its follow-up "The Beast" Showing just how low an artist could sink for his art, what was the director going to do next?
Poland was and is a deeply Roman Catholic country, and the film is not without some religious overtones. Eve is said to be "the first sinner" and we know the director liked to use "religion as a way to express erotic behavior". Strangely, although the women in his films are clearly being exploited and his films are rightly described as exploitation, the argument has been made that in many ways the women of the films get the upper hand or have free agency -- perhaps they make poor choices or are in bad situations, but they are not merely passive.
This fact makes these films actually, dare we say, feminist. Can we fault her for her choices? And can we fault the director for showing a strong woman making such hard choices? The Blu-ray from Arrow Video is packed ridiculously full. We have an audio commentary by the impressively knowledgeable Samm Deighan and Kat Ellinger, best known for their Daughters of Darkness podcast.
There is a new introduction by poster designer Andrzej Klimowski and a new interview with lead actor Grazyna Dlugolecka. Furthermore, film critic David Thompson talks on the use of classic music in Borowczyk's films; Daniel Bird presents a video essay concerning the director's obsessions; there is a video essay on Borowczyk and Lenica's contributions to newsreels and documentaries on art history; a short news reel documentary about poster art co-written by Borowczyk; an interview with Juliusz Zamecznik, son of photographer and graphic artist Wojciech Zamecznik; and an interview with poster artist Teresa Byszewska.
Those hours of bonus content not enough for you? Arrow even threw in 2K restorations from the original negatives of Borowczyk's ground-breaking Polish shorts: "Once Upon a Time" co-directed by Jan Lenica , "Dom" co-directed by Lenica and "The School", each with optional audio commentaries. It is nigh impossible to imagine a greater tribute to the work of Borowczyk in video form. When Ewa's mother Karolina Lubienska finds out, she sends Lukasz away and Ewa becomes shamelessly lustful in defiance "I'm not a slut yet but I may become one".
Managing to track Lukasz down through a publisher when she discovers one of his recent scientific articles, she reunites with him and they physically consummate their relationship whereupon Lukasz leaves again with the promise of seeking a divorce from his wife in Rome.
When a healed Lukasz leaves on another trip to Vienna, Ewa discovers that she is pregnant and comes to believe that she has been abandoned by Lukasz. Learning that Lukasz is in jail in Rome for forgery, she relies upon the apparent benevolence of Szczerbic only to arrive after Lukasz has been set free. Her efforts to pursue Lukasz even as she comes to believe the worst of him cause her to fall in with other acquaintances of her lover who plan to exploit her in their own intrigues. Unlike some of Borowcyzk's other films, sexuality is not so much repressed as suppressed with Ewa receiving roses from Lukasz at her job, ripping off the blooms and stuffing them into her blouse in order to enjoy them in the privacy of her room spreading the petals over her naked body in an image than anticipates a sequence in THE BEAST.
Your weapons, spells and armor will gradually improve, but the fundamentals of the gameplay will remain the same - do as much damage as possible, but do not let the enemy hit you, for one blow can be fatal. Enemy souls are game currency. For them, the character can repair weapons, receive "services" from the NPC, pump skills and buy potions and armor.
Bonfires serve as the main "pier" for the character. Here he can refill a flask with estus, fix items, communicate with NPCs who tell not only his story and further actions, but also the process of creating the whole world.
You can increase the level of your character with "special" NPCs. They can be found at the turning points of any stage.. The game has a multiplayer mode in which players play as a "hollow" capable of becoming "human", but many players simply interfere with the passage, dying from bosses, restoring their strength.
