Reversing starters switch the shaft rotation of a 3-phase motor. This action happens because of the interchanging any two-line conductors that supply the motor load. Machines with smaller loads, including most handheld tools typically use only a switch instead of a motor starter.

Magnetic starters are stock components for numerous machines, and aftermarket starters are also used as replacement components or for retrofitting older machines. They are used in across-the-line applications and as reduced voltage starters for single- and three-phase motors.

Motor starters are available as open configurations that are installed in control panels, or they can be standalone units with enclosures, either NEMA or IEC certified.
